A Potpourri of Vestiges Feature
The trailer of Vishal Bhardwaj's Rangoon has just been released on YouTube. And it certainly lives up to its expectations. Produced by Sajid Nadiadwala, Rangoon is a period drama set in the backdrop of WWII. The trailer proves why Bhardwaj is held in such high esteem in Bollywood. Not only is he a master technician but he also knows how to seamlessly blend the technique with aesthetics. This mastery is evident in each and every frame of the three and a half minute long trailer. It wouldn't be too much too expect the same of the movie.
The trailer of Rangoon's opens up with the majestic shots of fighter aircrafts unleashing their fury as we are informed in Narendra Jha's baritone voiceover narration that it is the year 1944. While the world is engulfed in WWII, India is on the brink of independence. There is hysteria all around. The action quickly shifts to Mumbai as we are introduced to the fiery damsel Julia aka "Toofan Ki Beti" (played by Kangana Ranaut). In comes Saif Ali Khan who is playing Julia's love interest. Saif here seems to be playing a character similar to Rod Steiger's Komarovsky from David Lean's Doctor Zhivago. Those who have seen the David Lean classic may be able to see various other similarities as well.
Rangoon essentially promises to be a period drama with a love triangle at its heart. Kangana gets to romance both Saif as well as Bharawaj's blue-eyed boy Shahid Kapoor. And, to her credit, she appears to be sharing great chemistry with both the characters. From what appears from the trailer, it is Kangana's character that is central to the film. We get to see her different sides: bold as well as vulnerable, ferocious as well as fragile, domineering as well as subdued. Bhardwaj has a rare gift to get the best out of his characters. While Kangana is a natural when it comes to acting, it is Saif Ali Khan who often fails to bring his A-game to the fore. But not when he is working with someone of Bhardwaj's pedigree. Who can forget his remarkable turn in Omkara? In Rangoon, at least from what appears in the trailer, Saif is going to be a treat to watch, charming and menacing in equal parts.
Since it is a Bhardwaj's film one can hope that Shahid's character too would have a lot of meat despite the trailer showing otherwise. Vintage Bhardwaj, the sound and visuals are world class. The film promises to have an operatic quality that sprawling period pieces strive for.
One can only hope that the movie lives up to expectations set by the trailer. Rangoon is set to release on 24th February, 2017. Expect your passions to run wild.
