The contributing editor of A Potpourri of Vestiges, Syed Akrama aka SAAR, who is also a regular writer at Quora makes his predictions for the 2017 Oscars. The ceremony for the 89th Academy Awards would be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel on February 26, 2017.
SAAR's predictions are as follows:
1. Best Adapted Screenplay
Nominees:
1. “Moonlight” (Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney)
2. “Arrival” (Eric Heisserer)
3. “Fences” (August Wilson)
4. “Hidden Figures” (Theodore Melfi, Allison Schroeder)
5. “Lion” (Luke Davies)
Will win: Moonlight
Academy decided to move Barry Jenkin's Moonlight from
original screenplay category to the adapted screenplay category and this has given them an
edge over other nominees. Moonlight deals with a theme much more complex than
usual stories but is able to hold the movie and this will work in their favor
at the Oscars.
Can win: Fences
2. Best Original Screenplay
Nominees:
1. “Manchester by the Sea” (Kenneth Lonergan)
2.“La La Land” (Damien Chazelle)
3. “Hell or High Water” (Taylor Sheridan)
4. “20th Century Women” (Mike Mills)
5. “The Lobster” (Efthymis Filippou, Yorgos Lanthimos)
Will win: La La Land or Manchester by the Sea
Both the movies have potential to grab this Oscar. Although
both have completely different themes but they have created equal buzz and are open to clinch the first position. While La La Land is everyone's favorite
for this Award, I would give edge to Kenneth Lonergan for Manchester by the Sea
for brilliantly writing this movie with a perfect Screenplay.
Can win: La La Land or Manchester by the Sea
3. Best Supporting Actor:
Nominees:
1. Mahershala Ali (“Moonlight”)
2. Jeff Bridges (“Hell or High Water”)
3. Lucas Hedges (“Manchester by the Sea”)
4. Dev Patel (“Lion”)
5. Michael Shannon (“Nocturnal Animals”)
Will win: Mahershala Ali
He is almost a lock for picking this trophy for the first
time. It is going to be very tough to beat him for anyone else on the list
although there can be a debate about this.
Can Win: Lucas Hedges.
4. Best Supporting Actress:
Nominees:
1. Viola Davis (“Fences”)
2. Michelle Williams (“Manchester By the Sea”)
3. Naomie Harris (“Moonlight”)
4. Octavia Spencer (“Hidden Figures”)
5. Nicole Kidman (“Lion”)
Will win: Viola Davis.
Viola Davis has delivered a very strong and powerful
performance in Fences which will land her an Oscar trophy for the first time
after 2 previous nominations. No other actress on the list can match the
performance of Viola Davis.
Can win: Viola Davis has no real competition in this category
5. Best Actress:
Nominees:
Emma Stone (“La La Land”)
Natalie Portman (“Jackie”)
Isabelle Huppert (“Elle”)
Meryl Streep (“Florence Foster Jenkins”)
Ruth Negga (“Loving”)
Will win: Isabelle Huppert or Emma Stone.
Both these actresses have given brilliant performances and are
challenging each other for the coveted Oscar statuette. I would give edge to Isabelle
Huppert but Emma Stone might win amidst the landslide created by La La Land
Can Win: Natalie Portman.
6. Best Actor:
Nominees:
1. Casey Affleck (“Manchester by the Sea”)
2. Denzel Washington (“Fences”)
3. Ryan Gosling (“La La Land”)
4. Andrew Garfield (“Hacksaw Ridge”)
5. Viggo Mortensen (“Captain Fantastic”)
Will win: Casey Affleck.
Everyone would agree that Affleck deserve to win this trophy
for a brilliant character that he has given us. He has played an extremely complex role
making it look so easy and with all the praises he has been receiving from
all over, he is certainly a lock for this Oscar.
Can win: Denzel Washington.
7. Best Director:
Nominees:
1. Damien Chazelle (“La La Land”)
2. Barry Jenkins (“Moonlight”)
3. Kenneth Lonergan (“Manchester by the Sea”)
4. Denis Villeneuve (“Arrival”)
5. Mel Gibson (“Hacksaw Ridge”)
Will win: Damien Chazelle
La La Land turned out to be everyone's absolute favorite and the Academy showered a total of record 14 nominations for this movie. Damien
Chazelle is all set to pick up his first Oscar this time.
Can win: Denis Barry Jenkins.
8. Best Picture

Will win: La La Land
This is a perfect movie to make the Academy go crazy about it
and it actually did. It has the Best Picture Oscar written all over it and it will probably
win the big one.
