Mirza Juuliet, directed by Rajesh Ram Singh and written by Shanti Bhushan, is a tale of love, hate, lust, and deceit set in the backdrop of Uttar Pradesh. It stars Darshan Kumaar and Piaa Bajpai in the lead roles. Let's try to look at the film from various perspectives that make it an engaging film.
1. Darshan Kumaar's intense acting
Darshan who earlier impressed the critics with his remarkable turns in the film like NH10, Sarabjit and Mary Kom delivers yet another memorable performance as Mirza-the mysterious protagonist of 'Mirza Juuliet'. During his challenging portrayal he never really loses his poise and ultimately succeeds in leaving a lasting impression with his intense acting that's a rare hallmark in the current generation of actors.
2. Piaa Bajpai's bold presence
Piaa Bajpai is nothing short of a pocket sized dynamite. Her uninhibited dialogue delivery and timing are the rare gifts that make her repertoire quite unique as a Bollywood actress. Coming from the Hindi Belt, she seems to have a distinct advantage in terms of the command over the language. She may very well be the next Mahie Gill.
3. Punchy dialogs
The movie's dialogues pack a strong punch, and the credit goes to the writer, Shanti Bhushan, for choosing a sharp/vernacular-laden language laced with double meaning jokes. The characters' child-like fascination for sex may seem perplexing to the sophisticated audience, but the movie's prime target seems to be single screen/Tier-II & III audiences.
4. Breathtaking cinematography
Ajay Pandey's cinematography is one of the movie's strong points and helps to bring the characters and the places to life. As a matter of fact, the cinematography allows the backdrop of UP to become a character of its own.
5. Engaging Screenplay
'Mirza Juuliet' never really bores you as a viewer. Yes, the movie is clichéd and offers little that we haven't already seen in the films of Anurag Kashyap (Dev D, Gangs of Wasseypur, etc.), Tigmanshu Dhulia (Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster). It may also remind some of the masala action films of the '80s and the '90s. But even in its imitation, 'Mirza Juuliet' succeeds in leaving a strong impression.
6. Raw and gritty feel
The credit goes to the writer, director, and the creative team for giving 'Mirza Juuliet' a raw and gritty feel that one expects from gangster films of this kind. 'Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster' and Gangs of Wasseypur would definitively come to your mind while watching 'Mirza Juuliet'.
7. Priyanshu Chatterjee of 'Tum Bin' fame in a refreshing new avatar
After impressing everyone with his delightful performance in 'Tum Bin', actor Priyanshu Chatterjee somehow lost his way in the industry. None of his films since then has managed to create the magic of 'Tum Bin. But his powerful role in Mirza Juuliet might take casting directors to once again take him seriously as an actor.
8. Good old romance
Amidst a hoard of modern romcoms, it is heartening to see a movie trying to show romance in its good old flavour. It is the kind of love we only get to experience in literary classics/folklore but seldom get to watch on the silver screen nowadays.
