Salman Khan is on a roll. Over the last half a decade he has emerged as the undisputed king of Bollywood with blockbusters like Dabangg, Dabangg 2, Ek Tha Tiger, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. His twin releases in 2015 together end up grossing over an unprecedented 500 crore on the Indian boxoffice.

During his stellar career, Salman Khan has always been a king of single screen. But ever since the success of Wanted and Dabangg, he has strengthened his hold on the multiplex audiences as well. Of late, Salman Khan has also become choosier when it comes to role selection. He has also started taking his acting seriously. While Bajrangi Bhaijaan pioneered this transformation, Salman seems to have taken this to another level with his upcoming film Sultan, which is set to release this Eid.

According to trade experts Amul Mohan and Akshaye Rathi, Sultan, produced by Yash Raj Films, is expected to release in 4500-4800 screens across the country making it the widest Bollywood release ever in India. 2016 thus far hasn't been a very good year for Bollywood with a Hollywood offering like The Jungle Book being the highest grosser at the Indian boxoffice. With the exception of Akshay Kumar starrers Airlift and Houseful 3, no Bollywood film has managed to cross the magical figure of 100 crore. Even a major film like Fan, produced by Yash Raj Films and starring superstar Shah Rukh Khan, failed to impress at the boxoffice.

So, the onus is now on Salman Khan to break the jinx and deliver year's first major blockbuster to follow up the grand success of Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. The fact that it is releasing on Eid has already given it an edge. Salman Khan's fans are already going crazy about the film and there is little doubt that Sultan would be a major blockbuster.

What remains to be seen is if Sultan would succeed in breaking the current opening day record held by Shah Rukh Khan‘s Happy New Year (Rs 44.97 crore) and the highest opening weekend grosser record held by Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (129.77 crore), especially in the wake of the controversy created by Salman Khan's insensitive 'Rape' remark?
