On December 11, 2017 after a long
fight, Delhi High Court had finally cleared Mohalla Assi with just one cut and
an A-Certificate, rejecting the CBFC’s verdict which demanded for 10 cuts. The
court had also instructed the CBFC to grant the necessary certification within
a weak.
However, the CBFC has failed to
act as per the orders of the Delhi High Court, forcing the makers to file for
contempt of court against the CBFC chief Prasoon Joshi. The hearing for the
same is scheduled for 12 January, 2018.
It is to be noted that the film
was earlier denied a release on grounds of hurting religious sentiments. A lot
of films with controversial subjects in the recent times have been at the
receiving end of CBFC’s stringent scrutiny—the latest being Sexy Durga.

Shukla, Mukesh Tiwari, and Rajendra Gupta. The film is based on a novel by Kashi
Nath Singh and is produced by Vinay Tiwari under the banner of Crossword
Entertainment Pvt. Ltd.
Mohalla Assi is the dream project of director Chandraprakash
Dwivedi who helmed the renowned TV series Chanakya as well as the critically
acclaimed movie Pinjar. Mohalla Assi has already leaked online and those who
have seen it have praised it greatly. Also, film journalists have criticized
the CBFC for unnecessarily delaying the release of the film. Noted film journalist
Deepak Dua when asked about the film said, “The film is based on a novel by the
renowned Hindi writer Kashi Nath Singh and since the novel itself has been well
received by the Indian society it is a bit perplexing that the film based on
the novel has received such serious objections.” While commending Dwivedi’s
direction and describing it as a serious improvement on his previous
directorial outing Zed Plus, Dua also praised the performance of Sunny Deol in
the film and described it as one of his career best performances.
He also praised Sakshi Tanwar’s performance in the movie.
