2017 Emmy Awards: Our Predictions

A Potpourri of Vestiges Feature

The nominees for the 2017 Emmy Awards were announced last month by Shemar Moore and Anna Chlumsky. Two of the biggest omissions are Game of Thrones and the new Twin Peaks. But it has nothing to do with the consistent and unquestionable quality that these two shows offer, for it is the May 1st submission deadline that’s to be blamed. The 69th Emmys, to be aired on September 17, will be hosted by Stephen Colbert. Even a cursory look at this year’s nominees is enough to appreciate the growing dominance of Netflix. With shows like House of Cards, Stranger Things, The Crown, Black Mirror: San Junipero, Master of None, etc. Netflix ended up garnering a total of 91 nominations.

It is however HBO’s Westworld that tops the chart with a total of 22 nominations along with NBC’s Saturday Night Live. Despite Game of Thrones not making the cut, HBO showed its might with a total of 110 nominations—the highest among all networks—thanks to the likes of Big Little Lies, The Wizard Of Lies, The Night Of, Veep, and Westworld, of course.  Next to Westworld, we have Stranger Things with 18 nominations and The Crown with 13 nominations. The other contenders for the Outstanding Drama Series are NBC’s This Is Us, Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, AMC’s Better Call Saul, and Netflix’ House of Cards.

As per my calculations, along with HBO’s Westworld, the Netflix original show Stranger Things is one of the favourites to win an Emmy Award on September 17. Also, I have a hunch that come September 17 Kevin Spacey may finally go home with an Emmy of his own. This year he is competing with the likes of Anthony Hopkins (Westworld), Liev Schreiber (Ray Donovan), Sterling K. Brown (This Is Us), Matthew Rhys (The Americans), Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul), and Milo Ventimiglia (This Is Us). Among the actresses, the strongest contender has to be Claire Foy for The Crown. But she will face fierce completion from Evan Rachel Wood (Westworld), and Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale). Also, one can never count out Robin Wright for House of Cards.

Big Little Lies (HBO) and Feud: Bette & Joan (FX) are arguably the strongest contenders for Outstanding Limited Series. As far as Outstanding TV movie is concerned, it’s mostly likely going to be a fight between The Wizard of Lies and Black Mirror: San Junipero. The Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy for this year should either go to Veep or Atlanta. With just about a month left the grapevine seems rife with speculations. But the thing with Emmys is that popularity seldom guarantees a win and so you better brace yourself for some surprises!
