Buzz around Star Trek

Star TrekStar Trek Beyond, directed by the Taiwanese American filmmaker Justin Lin

Star Trek, created by the American screenwriter and producer Gene Roddenberry, is one the most successful entertainment franchises of all time. The science fiction franchise has enjoyed a cult following for decades and is owned by CBS and Paramount Pictures. Star Trek’s influence is not limited to science fiction and the celebrated franchise has been instrumental to the development of various technological inventions such as tablet computers, cell phones, etc.

With the release of the latest Star Trek film, Star Trek Beyond, the franchise is touching new heights the world over. In addition to receiving rave reviews abroad, the film is well on course to breaking all kinds of box-office records. The film has done a business of USD 60 million approx in its opening weekend itself. The early success of Star Trek Beyond, the third film of the 2009 Star Trek reboot, is a strong proof that the new Star Trek films are fast gaining traction with the new age audience. The film is already being described as the best in the Star Trek series. Also, the response from the Indian audiences so far has been quite warm. The Trekkies in India are once again proving why #StarTrekInIndia is always a major cinematic extravaganza in the country.

Star Trek films are known to be the best when they primarily focus on their characters. The late American film critic, Roger Ebert, wrote in his review of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982), more than three decades back, “Star Trek stories have always been best when they are centered around their characters.” That’s precisely where Star Trek Beyond seems to be hitting the bulls-eye. Going by the critical praise that it has garnered thus far, it can be said that Star Trek Beyond is a worthy addition to the Star Trek franchise.

Star Trek Beyond is directed by the Taiwanese-American filmmaker Justin Lin who has previously directed blockbusters like Fast & Furious (2009), Fast Five (2011), and Fast & Furious 6 (2013). Lin’s direction in Star Trek Beyond is absolutely topnotch. He is not only able to elicit solid performances from all his entire cast but he also succeeds in establishing a much-needed balance between the plot and action elements. Overall, the film has all the makings of a perfect Hollywood blockbuster and is a must watch!
