Summary: The year is 1953. A visiting archaeologist called Varun Shrivastav comes to the village of Manikpur in West Bengal to excavate the temple grounds of the local Zamindar. Varun greatly impresses the Zamindar and his family, especially his daughter Pakhi.
It's a romantic movie to the core and yet it's everything which a Bollywood romantic movie is not.

You start to like it, love it and then love it so much that you don't want to see any fault (if there is any).
Vikramaditya has done a wonderful work, and the whole movie is the director's vision right from word go.
The movie is based in the 1950's and all the minute details have been well taken care of. The era comes alive in front of you and you just can't help but want to be a part of the era.
Coming to the performances, they are so good that you will only see the characters, Varun and Paakhi, and never any element of Ranveer or Sonakshi. For this full marks once again must go to the director as his vision of characters is impeccable.
The character of Paakhi required to have an element of vulnerability such that the audience could actually feel the pain along with the character. And the work done by Sonakshi suggests that she was up to the task: the vulnerability exists in her eyes, facial expressions and even the coughing when she gets sick.
Ranveer is brilliant in the role of a soft spoken archaeologist and couple of awards for both the leads are guaranteed.
The background score and songs set the tone of the movie and will remain with you even after you have stepped out of the cinema hall.

The pace of the movie will put off a lot of people, but given that we are living an instant-gratification world it would be hardly surprising. The pace of the movie is in fact its strength and any attempt to hurry things would have taken the romance out of the movie.
This movie is not going to do very well commercially; if it does I will be surprised. But then I am sure that Vikramaditya Motwane was not thinking of any commercial implications while making the movie and he maintained that right till the end.

Go and watch the movie, this is one experience which should not be missed...

People who liked this also liked...
I just want to watch movie for its cinematography specially those early 50s scene which is looking excellent in the trailers
ReplyDeleteWell, IMHO, the USP of Lootera is its sumptuous cinematography... the period details are captured with great meticulousness. But, it's well backed up by a great story!!!
ReplyDeletemast angreji likhta hai be !! :P
ReplyDeleteI am really sorry to hear that the movie disappointed you... I have yet to see it myself!!! :-)
ReplyDeleteI try... sometimes it pays off!!! :-)
ReplyDeleteI loved the powerpacked performances delivered by both these actors. Sonakshi delivers a deeply heartfelt performance that feels mature beyond her years. Ranveer, for his part, brings a quiet sensitivity but at the sme time smoldering intensity to his character. he certainly leaves a lasting impression.
ReplyDeleteGood review done by Sidhartha!
I have already seen the movie and go by the review! Yes .. I would surely say .. the movie looses its pace in between many a times .. throughout the movie..it gets too slow at times .. Cinematography was a treat to the eyes and the actors, all of them were just so perfect . Divya Dutt was not given a role worth her callibre and that was disappointing !
ReplyDeletebad review by siddharth ... murzi tere reviews dhaansu rehte hain dost !!!
ReplyDeleteI finally watched Lootera today. The biggest compliment that I can give is that there is nothing "Bollywood-like" about it... Lootera seems to carry the stamp of a quintessential art house product from European cinema. Vikramaditya Motwane and team need to be congratulated for their commendable effort!!!
ReplyDeleteWatched it today... just can't agree more with all that you have mentioned above!!!
ReplyDeleteIt's really disapponting that Divya was wasted in that short role... but that didn't really take anything away from the movie. I believe it's an exceptionally well made film. Those accustomed to watching a typical Bollywood film (as Siddhartha mentioned in his review) would be utterly disappointed, for the movie appears to have come straight out of a European art house and not an Indian one. I am truly impressed!!!
ReplyDeleteI don't know in which way this movie is interesting,it's actually sleep inducing
ReplyDeleteThat's because it's not a typical Bollywood movie and casual viewers whose sole purpose is entertainment are bound to be disappointed!!!

Thank you for promoting my post. Now read yours. Saw the movie just yesterday and found it refreshing...for the simple reason that there was a lot of expressions instead of dialogues. Am beginning to respect both the young actors apart from the cinematography. But mostly want to own a personal copy of O Henry, ' The last Leaf '. Something about the love and tragedy...
ReplyDeleteAppreciate the review by Mr Siddhartha Gandhi
Murtaza Ali jee thank you for promoting my post and thus leading me here to where i should be this fine Thursday morn. Saw the movie just yesterday...and i am the kind who knows her likes better than going blindly for ratings and reviews. i sure did love the movie for i found it refreshing in one particular way. Quiet words depicting a whole world of emotions. Cinematography yes...but the story was powerful too with an inspiring moral. Have begun to respect the young actors for making us relate to reality especially about the splendor called love.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing the guest review by Siddhartha G. Honest Words indeed!
Never read O Henry before but now want to own my own personal copy of ' The Last Leaf '.
Well... I couldn't have agreed more with what you have mentioned above! And thanks a lot for sharing your valuable thoughts... glad you liked the review!!! :-)
ReplyDeleteThe pleasure is all mine, Dear Shivani jee!!!
ReplyDeleteI am yet to watch Lootera; however, I enjoyed reading the above review. A very well crafted one that seems to have captured the essence of the movie very well.
ReplyDeleteGlad you liked the review... would love to hear your thoughts once you are done watching it!!! :-)
ReplyDeletei loved this movie... a lot...
ReplyDeletei say, only those who have high tastes- like not watching a movie just for entertainment but for the art of movie-making itself, and the art of expression of something that goes beyond entertainment- would like this movie..
this is one of those movies that will stay with me for long....
I couldn't have agreed more... Motwane and team deserve all the credit for pulling it off. Also, thanks for sharing your thoughts.
